About the Workshop |
|
Most empirical research on skills (cognitive and non-cognitive) and preferences has largely relied on data from high-income, industrialized countries. There is, however, a growing literature that extends this line of research to post-transition and emerging economies, which may be of particular scientific interest because it gives the opportunity to study contexts with a much wider variability of conditions. |

Therefore, we are very pleased to announce the Third IZA - Higher School of Economics Workshop on the formation of skills and preferences and their impact on the labor market in post-transition and emerging economies. The aim of the workshop is to bring together a number of junior and senior researchers to discuss their recent empirical and experimental studies on the above broad theme. |

We strive for a regional balance regarding the presented research. Hence, we invite research from China, Central Asia, Latin America, North Africa, the post-Soviet region and Central and Eastern Europe. |
|
Topics of the workshop will include (but are not limited to):
- The formation of cognitive and non-cognitive skills in early childhood and adolescence
- Measurement of preferences and skills using survey instruments and experiments
- Malleability of preferences and cognitive and non-cognitive skills, and their rank order stability
- Preferences and skills as driving factors of selection into labor market states and geographic mobility
- Discrimination in labor markets
- Long-term effects of educational interventions targeted at cognitive and non-cognitive skills

Submission |
|
Researchers interested in participating should submit a full paper or extended abstract by June 30, 2019 using our Online Application Form. We will send out acceptance notifications by July 21, 2019. |

Funding |
Those authors who are invited are expected to participate in the entire two day workshop. Economy class airfares and up to 3 nights of lodging for presenting authors will be covered according to the IZA Reimbursement Guidelines.
Kindly note that tax regulations prohibit IZA from fully reimbursing the travel expenses of conference participants who combine their trip with other destinations or extend their stay beyond the four-day window surrounding the event.
