About the Workshop

In the last decade we have seen rising inequality in earnings and incomes in many post-transition and emerging economies, which has been exacerbated by the CORONA pandemic. A greater incidence of temporary employment, informal employment and a rise in the importance of the Gig Economy have all contributed to this trend. The CORONA crisis has exacerbated inequality trends along the formal-informal divide and by gender. This crisis has also amplified the divergence in the access to education for children with long-term consequences of human capital formation for children from poorer households resulting in even more inequality in the long run.

The workshop, organized by IZA, will focus on the determinants of inequality in post-transition and emerging economies. Possible topics include but are not limited to:

  • The role of labor market segregation along the formal-informal divide
  • Temporary jobs as transit to permanent employment or dead-end jobs
  • Trading off job insecurity for higher wages in the Gig Economy
  • Drivers of job polarization in post-transition and emerging economies
  • Gender inequality in the face of the CORONA crisis or changing social norms
  • Inequality in educational opportunities for children in the CORONA crisis and long-term consequences
  • Policy interventions to combat rising inequality: Success and failures
