About the Workshop

We are pleased to invite submissions for a Workshop on the Economics of Long-Term Care and Healthy Aging, which is jointly organized by IZA and CINCH, University of Duisburg-Essen.

Population aging brings new challenges for the organization of labor markets regarding how social care for frail older individuals should be delivered and financed. This presents an opportunity to increase employment in the caregiving sector, but it also has strong implications for the health and wellbeing of both workers in the caregiving sector and care recipients themselves. We are interested in submissions that cover the following areas:

  • Informal caregiving and labor markets
  • Community care and wellbeing
  • Determinants of care needs, and primary prevention
  • Staffing and quality of nursing homes
  • Lifecycle modelling of needs and demand for care
  • Caregiving subsidies and outcomes
  • Other areas related to ‘Long-Term Care and Healthy Aging’

The workshop agenda is related to important issues for IZA’s new program area in Environment, Health, and Labor Markets, and to the broader IZA mission of studying the connection between demographic changes and the world of work. The workshop will bring together a small group of economists working on Long-Term Care in different countries and consist of a mix of early career and more established researchers.

The keynote lecture will be delivered by Edward C. Norton (University of Michigan).
