Joint IZA/OECD Workshop: Global Trends and Local Labor Markets
About the Workshop
Decarbonization, digitalization, globalization and ageing are expected to drive profound changes in labor markets worldwide, though adjustment costs are likely to be unevenly distributed. Local impacts may vary depending on factors such as firm specialization, product and labor market structures, and labor market institutions. The potential consequences for firms, workers and broader communities could be especially severe in regions with limited and shrinking opportunities.
This joint IZA/OECD workshop held in Bonn, 25-26 September 2025, will aim at providing new insights on how firms and workers worldwide adapt to this imminent structural change. We invite papers on how the main overarching factors – digitalization, globalization, ageing but in particular decarbonization and related socio-ecological transition – affect workers and firms in local labor markets in the short and longer term and shape local inequalities.
Preference will be given to papers using linked employer-employee data. The workshop is organised in collaboration with the OECD LinkEED 2.0 initiative, which seeks to mobilise linked employer-employee data for cross-country research and policy analysis ( https://www.oecd.org/en/about/projects/linkeed-200.html).
Against this background, related topics may include:
- Skills Mismatch, Occupational Mobility and Workforce Development
- Firm Adaptation, Worker Careers and Unions
- Job Displacement, Wage Insurance and Local Spillovers
- Regional Disparities, Local Labor Market Concentration and Place-Based Policies
- Regional Mobility, Job Reallocation and Behavioral Responses
- Labor Market Policies Institutions and their Interactions
